About Us

At Inprentus, we advance precision optics through innovative blazed diffraction gratings technology. Our team designs and manufactures custom diffraction gratings engineered for high efficiency, accuracy, and optical performance across industries including synchrotron and FEL research, semiconductor manufacturing, augmented reality, spectroscopy, and government applications. With proprietary nano-scale lithography technologies and rigorous metrology, Inprentus delivers optics built to meet the most demanding scientific and commercial requirements.

Founded in Champaign, Illinois in 2012 by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign physics professor Peter Abbamonte, Inprentus began with a vision to commercialize a new approach to nano-scale lithography and mechanical ruling. What started as university research has grown into a precision optics company serving synchrotron facilities, semiconductor manufacturers, augmented reality developers, government laboratories, and advanced research intuitions around the world. Through continued innovation in blazed diffraction grating design and manufacturing, Inprentus has helped push the limits of optical performance, customization, and efficiency for next-generation scientific and commercial applications.

At Inprentus, our mission is to advance precision optical technology through innovative diffraction grating design, nano-scale manufacturing, and customer-focused engineering. We are committed to helping researchers, manufacturers, and technology leaders achieve higher performance in demanding optical systems. By combining proprietary lithography techniques with deep expertise in blazed diffraction gratings, Inprentus delivers custom optical solutions that support progress in synchrotron science, semiconductor manufacturing, augmented reality, spectroscopy, and advanced research.
Inprentus' vision is to shape the future of precision optics by making high-performance diffraction grating technology more customizable, scalable, and accessible for advanced applications. As industries continue to demand greater optical efficiency, accuracy, and reliability, Inprentus aims to lead innovation in blazed diffraction gratings and nano-scale manufacturing. Through continued research, engineering excellence, and collaboration with customers, we envision a future where our grating technology helps power breakthroughs in scientific discovery, semiconductor manufacturing, augmented reality, spectroscopy, and next-generation optical systems.
Government-Backed Innovation

SBIR/STTR Heritage

Inprentus’ early technology development was supported by the U.S. SBIR program, including NSF Phase I and Phase II awards for a novel method of manufacturing ultra-precise diffraction gratings for X-ray analysis and imaging. This SBIR history reflects federal validation of Inprentus’ core manufacturing approach and its continued path toward commercialization.
